Commonly Asked Questions About Birth Photography
Answers about documenting your birth story with Amanda
Often there are some really important questions that families want answered before considering birth photography. Below you will find some of the most asked questions I have received as a birth photographer. A consult can be set up, not only to answer any additional questions but to go into more detail on any of the following. Plus, the meeting is a great opportunity to begin developing a relationship and build trust.
Question one
Can I keep my photos private?
YES 100% Your privacy is very important to me. I like to share on my social media but I will never share anything that you do not approve first.
Question Two
How far will you travel for births?
Most births happen within 1.5 hour radius of Wake Forest. A small travel fee is added to births in Greensboro, Fayetteville or similar distances. Special arrangements can be beyond this radius… even if you are out of state!
Question Three
How long do you stay after the birth of baby?
So many special moments happen shortly after birth so I plan for up to two hours after welcoming baby earth-side!
Question Four
Do you photograph everything?
I photograph anything you are comfortable with. Many clients grant me permission to document everything, and then they choose what they want to share with friends and family.
Question Five
Will I get to meet you first?
Yes! It is so important for you to feel comfortable with everyone present. I am excited to hear about your birth plan and the beginning of your story as it unfolds. Lets meet up for coffee or a delicious treat!
Question Six
What if my birth space is dark?
Cool with me! I don’t use flash so you can expect your images to be a bit moody and grainy.
Question Seven
What do I do with birth photos?
Coffee table book - seriously! Your kids will love having a book they can look through and talk about. Many of my clients have a book they share with their kids and the conversations surrounding images is so special and allows for positive communication about birth.
Question Eight
Do you have a backup photographer?
Absolutely! I have a few that I can call upon if needed. The process is seamless, and they show up in my place if I am unable to be there. The images are delivered to me, so all the editing and delivery still come from me.
Question Nine
What if you miss my birth?
Birth is so unpredictable that there is never a guarantee that I will make it. In fact, my photographer almost missed my own birth. If you have a precipitous labor and baby arrives before I do, you can expect me to stay longer after birth to ensure I have captured as much of the first few hours as possible. A few weeks after birth, I will set up a time to come to your home for a voice recording of your birth story to include it in your video. It is a really unique touch to your story.
Question Ten
How long are you on call?
Four weeks is the most common time frame. We can discuss the weeks in which work best for you, 38-42 is the most popular. I do everything in my power to be at every birth, no matter what week gestation you deliver. Having set weeks on my calendar allows me to have adequate childcare plans in place.
Question Eleven
When should we book you?
Due to the unpredictability of births, I only take 3 births a month. If you are wanting to get on my calendar, I recommend contacting me as early as possible. Many months are booked up 5-8 months in advance.
Question Twelve
How can you offer photography and doula services?
It’s tough! My doula style is more emotional support, eduction and empowerment before, during and after birth. I have great suggestions for laboring, and comfort and encourage your partner to take a more active role by example. This frees me up to take photos while also supporting. Communication is key, and we will discuss certain moments that you anticipate needing or wanting doula support over photography and vice versa.
