A letter to expecting parents
The anticipation of your birthing day can be so exciting and full of nerves. Having me as part of your team brings a whole layer of support you didn’t know you needed. I strive to support all my clients in ways I wanted and found helpful throughout my own pregnancies and births. This comes naturally and feels the most impactful in the postpartum period.
Be prepared for a few messages from me asking how YOU are doing! I have many resources I can share, and really love when I can offer an ear or connect you with another family. I leave the birth space hoping our relationship will continue, building a friendship in whatever capacity you are open to!
Frequently Asked Questions
About documenting your birth story with Amanda
How long are you on call?
Four weeks is the most common time frame. We can discuss the weeks in which work best for you, 38-42 is the most popular. I do everything in my power to be at every birth, no matter what week gestation you deliver. Having set weeks on my calendar allows me to have adequate childcare plans in place.
Do you have a backup photographer?
Absolutely! I have a few that I can call upon if needed. The process is seamless, and they show up in my place if I am unable to be there. The images are delivered to me, so all the editing and delivery still come from me.
When should we book you?
Due to the unpredictability of births, I only take 3 births a month. If you are wanting to get on my calendar, I recommend contacting me as early as possible. Many months are booked up 5-8 months in advance.
What if you miss my birth?
Birth is so unpredictable that there is never a guarantee that I will make it. In fact, my photographer almost missed my own birth. If you have a precipitous labor and baby arrives before I do, you can expect me to stay longer after birth to ensure I have captured as much of the first few hours as possible. A few weeks after birth, I will set up a time to come to your home for a voice recording of your birth story to include it in your video. It is a really unique touch to your story.
What do I do with birth photos?
Coffee table book - seriously! Your kids will love having a book they can look through and talk about. Many of my clients have a book they share with their kids and the conversations surrounding images is so special and allows for positive communication about birth.
How can you offer photography and doula services?
It’s tough! My doula style is more emotional support, education and empowerment before, during and after birth. I have great suggestions for laboring, and comfort and encourage your partner to take a more active role by example. This frees me up to take photos while also supporting. Communication is key, and we will discuss certain moments that you anticipate needing or wanting doula support over photography and vice versa.
Frequently Asked Questions
About documenting your family story with Amanda
What do we do for a family session?
These sessions are unique to you and your individual family. First, we will talk about what story you are wanting to tell. I recommend not having ‘planed’ activities for your session, but rather a few things ready to go that you and your family enjoy. This can be making food, bubbles, crafts, outdoor activities, popsicles, etc. Really, anything is perfect to document especially if you are together and having fun!
What do we wear for our documentary session?
Anything is fair game as I want your personalities to shine through. There are just a few what NOT to wears - especially with films. Try to avoid neon colors and small stripes. Everything else - including science goggles and costumes - yes please!
I don’t want to clean my house, now what?
GOOD! Seriously, this is the season you’re in and it’s real life that I want to capture. My house is often in shambles, sprinkled with thousands of Pokémon cards and LEGO but its a reflection of all the many passions my kids and family are into.
